Hello world! Summer weather has arrived and even thought I love getting
outside for a nice run in the gorgeous weather any chance I get, it's still not
enough to keep me away from the movies. With that in mind, I'm ressurecting an
ancient Baesler blog tradition. Once a staple of our site, it somehow went by
the wayside in recent years. Yes, I am speaking of my infamous movie review
blogs. Read by few, sweat over by me, and returning at the behest of our very
own Brent Thorson, my one and possibly only regular reader. If nothing else, I
least we know how to keep 'each other' entertained in Marcoux
Corner!
It's been so long, I'm not sure how far back to dip.
Humm...???? Waitress-
Waitress is the perfect place to start
because it is just the kind of movie I like to kick summertime off with; light,
funny, colorful, and with a good amount of heart. Written and directed by the
late Adrienne Shelly, who tragically was murdered under mysterious circumstances
before the film's release, Waitress is bursting with unique humor and playful
bittersweetness. A kind of realist optimist's view of the world. Keri
Russel, she of Felicity fame, finally delivers on the promise she's shown since
capturing my "heart" in 1992's Honey I Blew Up the Kid, with performance of
great luminescence and strength. Here she stars as Jenna, a cynical pie shop
waitress, stuck in a horrible marriage and a crappy job, who finds comfort and
an outlet to her frustrations in the wildly creative, incredibly delicious pies
she creates. Jenna's co-workers aren't much happier the she in life or love but
they bond together when one of them is in need. When Jenna finds out she's
pregnant, the news doesn't light up her life, but makes her even more depressed.
Just one more headache she'll have to deal with, she thinks. Something needs to
change, and soon! Screwball comedy, sitcom shtick, melodrama, Wes Anderson
style irony, it's all thrown in the blender and somehow it holds together once
poured out and onto the screen. But surely it can't be as dire as this?
Surely she can't carry on this? Of course not. As par for the course, what is
wrong must be made right. The bad shall get their due and so on. How it all goes
down however, is a joy to behold. It's not the re-invention of the wheel. We've
seen this type of story dozen's, if not hundreds of times. But as they say, it's
how you tell the story that matters and Waitress delivers her own unique slice
of cinematic goodness.
